What size shipping container do I need?

Most decisions come down to three sizes. A 20 ft standard container is the workhorse: roughly the footprint of a single parking space, with about eight feet of interior width. Think of it as a very secure one-car garage - it comfortably swallows the contents of a two- to three-bedroom home, a contractor's tools and materials, or seasonal equipment. It is also the easiest size to place on a tight site.

A 20 ft high cube has the same footprint with roughly an extra foot of ceiling height. That foot matters more than it sounds: taller shelving, stand-up workspace, tall equipment, or bulky items that just miss fitting in a standard. If the site can take a 20-footer, the high cube is often the more useful buy for the small difference.

A 40 ft high cube doubles the footprint and keeps the tall ceiling - about twice the parking space, and the size to think about for whole-house storage during a renovation, serious inventory overflow, or a shop converting the container into working space. The tradeoff is delivery: a 40-footer needs a substantially longer straight run for the truck, so tight residential sites often rule it out before capacity does.
